Stand Up and Take Action Campaign 2009 - CITYNET members show strong spirit!

In cooperation with the UN Millennium Campaign CITYNET once again mobilised members for this year’s Stand Up and Take Action Campaign (SUTA). 21 events from eight members of CITYNET were held during October 16-18, 2009 showing the strong spirit and dedication of members. In Asia, more than 100 million people participated (101,106,845) in the campaign with worldwide participation of 173,045,325 at over 3,000 events in more than 120 countries, the record shattered! In Makati, participants numbered more than seventy thousand people (71,045) significantly adding to the result of the Philippines topping the MDGs campaign for the second consecutive year. The City opened with the “Makati City State of MDGs” and present during the event from the United Nations were Ms. Jacqueline Badcock, and Mr. Minar Pimple, UN Millennium Campaign Executive Director for Asia and Erwin Binay Jr. who delivered welcome remarks on behalf of Mayor Jejomar C. Binay. Other events included a simultaneous citywide three-minute “Stand-Up and Speak-Out Moment” and a ‘Noise Barrage’ in which five churches, 17 fire stations and 9,867 transport groups showed their support. On the second day of events, campaigns for the environment (including tree planting and workshops ) and nationwide dialogues with barangays in their respective campaigns to achieve the MDGs were also held. On the final day, almost three thousand (2917) participants joined the ‘Fun Run for MDGs’ as the culminating activity.

The City of Iloilo held cultural programmes including dance and theatre for the event.

In Sidoarjo, one of the newest CITYNET members, over six thousand (6068) people gathered for this Stand Up Event. On the first day, Sidoarjo held five events, opening with a mass sporting event and pledge led by Win Hendrarso, Sidoarjo’s Mayor. A ‘Washing Hands Campaign’ and a puppet show were special events for the children. Sidoarjo also provided free medical check-ups for the poor and planted 1000 trees on the same day.

Over 1000 people gathered near City Hall in Banda Aceh for the SUTA event where Mrs. Illiza Sa’aduddin, Vice Mayor of Banda Aceh lead the speech in a call for action. In attendance were visitors from other countries, such as Apeldoom City, The Netherlands which is a sister city of Banda Aceh Municipality.

In Sukabumi, various kinds of events were held on 16 October which began with a formal ceremony at City Hall including participation of officials from Sukabumi City Hall, private companies, students, and the general public. Other events featured the launching and selling of products such as motorcycles, computers, and farming tools. Free medical check ups for the orphans and pregnant women were also held. In total, more than two thousand (2062) people joined the events, and over 24,000 (24,551) people listened to a sermon on poverty reduction via electronic media.

Kathmandu showed their support for the SUTA by organising an action with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City staff, media personalities, politicians and representatives of other civil societies joined the campaign.

The Mayor of Balikpapan made the declaration for their city which was also involved in advertising for the event via print media.

The Office of International Policy in Yokohama City Government also stood up and took part in the campaign.
